The start of school is just around the corner and the people of Styria are ready to dig deep into their pockets. While the school bells will ring on September 2nd in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, school will start a week later in the rest of the country, on September 9th.

Styria: Pioneer in school start expenses

The current figures of the Trade Association show that Styria is one of the most generous federal states. On average, Styrians spend 105 euros on starting school – more than in many other regions in Austria. This is significantly higher than the Austrian average of 97 euros. Carinthians spend the same amount as Styrians, which makes the southern federal states the leaders when it comes to back-to-school gifts. In comparison, spending in the capital Vienna is 90 euros.

Popular gifts: Stationery and sweets on the winner’s podium

The greatest focus is on stationery, which is given as a gift by one in three respondents. Art supplies and (school) bags are also among the favorites. Cash gifts, clothing and sweets are also particularly popular. These categories are very popular and are at the top of the wish lists.

Retail benefits: 220 million euros extra turnover

The trade association hopes to generate total sales of 220 million euros from back-to-school shopping. Brick-and-mortar retailers remain the first choice for shoppers. Around 62 percent of respondents prefer shopping in local specialist stores, followed by discounters and supermarkets. Online shops also play a role, but only come in fourth place.

Regional retailers on the rise

Rainer Will, Managing Director of the Trade Associationemphasizes: “The start of school represents a valuable opportunity for regional retailers. Two thirds of the expenditure goes to stationary retail, which underlines the trend towards regional shopping. Our local shops score points with competent advice and quick availability.”
