Graz (May 16, 2023).- According to the current state statistics report, the Styrian labor market developed positively in 2022. The unemployment rate in Styria fell from 6.5 percent to 5.2 percent within a year. There was a significant decline of -45.4 percent, especially among the long-term unemployed. When re-entering the labor market, the Styrian state government relied on targeted qualification measures.
“The latest statistical report on the domestic labor market is very encouraging. On the part of the Styrian state government, we want to reinforce this trend and push targeted measures, especially in the area of training and further education. Because qualification is a central building block against unemployment,” says the Minister for Economic Affairs Barbara Eibinger-Miedlwhich also emphasizes: “Qualified workers are also the basis for the successful further development of the Styrian economy and our location.”
“The current development on the Styrian labor market is definitely positive, but in order to be prepared for the future, an active labor market policy together with the labor market service is still needed. We must invest more in qualification, make it easier to switch to other professional fields such as GreenJobs and leverage all the potential that exists in the Styrian population, especially among women. Fewer unemployed in all Styrian districts
According to the latest state statistics report, the unemployment rate in Styria was
5.2 percent and was thus well below the national value of 6.3 percent and below the value of the previous year (2021: 6.5 percent). According to the AMS, a total of 30,127 people were registered as unemployed in Styria, which was 7,052 or 19 percent fewer than in 2021. If you look at the number of unemployed at district level, the city of Graz has the highest rate at 8.7 percent, followed by Bruck-Mürzzuschlag with 5.6 percent and Murtal and Leibnitz with 5.5 percent each. The lowest rates have Weiz with 3.0 percent and Murau with 3.4 percent.
Significant decline in the long-term unemployed
A particularly pleasing trend can be seen in the area of long-term unemployment. Their number has decreased by 45.4 percent compared to the previous year. The greatest decline was in the Murau district with a drop of 62.9 percent to a total of 20 long-term unemployed. Despite a minus of 45 percent, the city of Graz has the most long-term unemployed with a total of 2,619.
Education and age as essential factors
With regard to the socio-demographic characteristics of the unemployed, it can be seen that education plays an important role. 77.6 percent of all unemployed people in Styria had no training that went beyond compulsory school or an apprenticeship. Age is also a crucial factor. The proportion of unemployed over 50 rose to 37 percent from 36.2 percent in 2021. Furthermore, 65 percent of all long-term unemployed in Styria were over 50 years old.
