Styria GP: Hamilton wins, Ferrari eliminates themselves

Valtteri Bottas retains the head of the championship…

Lewis Hamilton set the record straight by winning the Styrian Grand Prix. After signing his 89th pole position yesterday afternoon, the Briton led the race from start to finish. He is finally starting his season after finishing 4th last week on the same Red Bull Ring circuit.

The six-time world champion takes a double Mercedes. Valtteri Bottas took advantage of Max Verstappen’s troubles, having to contend with a Red Bull with a damaged front wing, to take 2nd place. The Finn saves the furniture while keeping the head of the championship. Max Verstappen saves the bronze medal and scores his first points of the year after his early retirement last week.

After having to resist the return of Sergio Pérez (Racing Point), Alex Albon (Red Bull) fails at the foot of the podium. Author of a thunderous end of race, Lando Norris finished 5th. The Briton overtook Pérez in extremis, who completed the last few kilometers with a front wing in compote. The Mexican is ranked 6th, which is an excellent result given that the Mexican was eliminated in Q1. The Top 10 is completed by Lance Stroll (Racing Point), Daniel Ricciardo (Renault), Carlos Sainz (McLaren) and Daniil Kvyat (AlphaTauri).

Only one Safety Car intervened during the race and this on the last lap. At the 1st hairpin of the circuit, Charles Leclerc hooked his teammate Sebastian Vettel. The Monegasque had his chassis affected while the German saw his rear spoiler crumble. Zero points for the Reds, as at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix.

The third abandonment of the event concerned Esteban Ocon, plagued by mechanical problems on his Renault when he qualified in 5th position.
