Style column: “The Bear” is also a fashion series, Sydney’s bandana is the star

Hardly anywhere is practicality presented as captivatingly as in “The Bear.” A homage to Sydney’s bandana.

There are many fashion series, three new ones have just been released this year. “The Bear” is not one of them. It is about cooking, trauma, Chicago and a little bit about Jeremy Allen White’s muscles. Aside from the dishes (mortadella cannoli, Boursin omelette, spaghetti pomodoro), the characters’ fashion is also discussed. In season one, Carmy Berzatto’s (White) white T-shirt captivated people. Half the internet was looking for it, and “New York Magazine” finally found it: from the German label Merz b. Schwanen, model 215, 85 euros. According to men’s magazines, the shirts are well-cut and robust, but the retailer’s website couldn’t cope with the rush.

Because of the fuss about the shirt and other items of clothing shown in the series, merchandise was launched at the start of the third season (overseas at the end of June, here on August 14th), together with the label J. Crew. The shirt, sweater, linen jacket and baseball cap are a little sparse, however, also because the actual heart of the new episodes is missing: Sydney Amadu’s (Ayo Edebiri) bandana. Sydney is the sous chef in Carmy’s restaurant; her headscarves are not just a matter of necessity. They form a colorful counterpoint to the dim, blue kitchen light, subtly underlining the importance of the role. They even give her an emancipatory moment and show fashion awareness. Her style is always so effortless that Sydney is a good style role model. Everyone wants to look good, and effortlessly. Her fictional antagonist in this regard would probably be Emily (in Paris), whose style often seems artificial.

Sydney’s bandanas are sold out (as is Carmy’s shirt), but fans have tracked them down again. They wouldn’t have been available in Europe anyway (most are vintage or from Chicago boutiques, a few from the Japanese label Kapital). Perhaps bandana merchandise will come with season four.
