The Ottawa Senators ended their losing streak Saturday with the return of Claude Giroux to Philadelphia. The former Flyers star scored three times in his side’s 4-1 victory. It was Ottawa’s first win after seven straight losses. Tim Stützle secured the final score with a goal into an empty net after the German international had already booked an assist with the winning goal. Senators goalie Cam Talbot also showed a strong performance, deflecting 37 shots.
A brace by Tyson Barrie gave Edmonton a 4-2 victory in Florida. In addition to the defender, goalkeeper Stuart Skinner was a match winner with 40 shots saved. It was the Oilers’ fifth win in seven road games of the season. The two superstars Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid each registered an assist. The German international has scored eleven games in a row, scored seven goals and prepared eleven goals in this period.
St. Louis ended the Vegas run with no bench reinforcement Thomas Greiss. The Golden Knights had won nine games in a row before a 2-3 home loss. The Blues celebrated their second straight victory after losing eight times. Ivan Berbashev and Ryan O’Reilly turned the game around in 40 seconds in the center third. Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington made 34 saves, 22 of them in the last period.
The evening, however, was less successful for the other German legionnaires in the NHL. JJ Peterka and the Buffalo Sabers lost 3-1 at home to top team Boston. Peterka received 14:09 minutes of ice and left the ice with a plus/minus balance of -1. The Sabers are now five games without a win. Despite rallying in the final third, Detroit lost 4-3 to Los Angeles. Moritz Seider was used for the Red Wings for 22:30 minutes and also ended up with a plus/minus balance of -1.
Defending champion Colorado is still on the road to success. The Avalanche won for the fourth straight in a 4-1 win over Carolina. Mikko Rantanen scored one goal and set up the other three, while Cale Makar scored twice. Calgary ended a seven-game losing streak thanks to a man-to-man goal by Trevor Lewis late in the second period. The Flames defeated Winnipeg 3-2.
