The holiday calendar in Agnieszka Engelmann’s principal’s office differs significantly from those in other schools due to its color markings: “Yellow stands for state holidays, green for Jewish holidays,” explains Agnieszka Engelmann. She is the head of the Jewish elementary school, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and was named after the Jewish industrialist, social reformer and benefactor Eduard Pfeiffer. As one of more than 70 primary schools in the city, privately run by the Israelite Religious Community of Württemberg (IRGW), but recognized by the state. For children and teachers, the regular holidays are just as natural as the Jewish holidays, which vary in date from year to year.
