Stuttgart ignited the battle for runner-up in the German Football League, after its fatal victory over Wolfsburg 3-2, reducing the difference with the “struggling” Bayern Munich to only four points, while Borussia Dortmund maintained the fourth place qualifying for the Champions League, by defeating its host Union Berlin. 2-0, amid a strong struggle with Leipzig, fifth, in stage 24.
Guinean striker Serho Geraci led his team, Stuttgart, to an important win away from home at the expense of Wolfsburg, after scoring a double for them (15 and 54 from a penalty kick), while Yuzoa Vagnomin III added (78). On the other hand, Danish Joachim Maihele scored for the hosts. (50) and Lucas Nmecha (83).
Stuttgart comfortably placed itself in third place, as it now has 50 points, six points behind Borussia Dortmund in fourth place, but it is now only four points away from the “wounded” Bayern, which fell into the trap of a 2-2 draw against its host Freiburg.
Stuttgart is presenting an exceptional season, after it was on the verge of relegation last season, before winning the playoff match to ensure its survival.
Geraci scored his 19th goal in 18 matches in the “Bundesliga”, where he ranks second in the scorers’ standings, behind Bayern’s English striker Harry Kane with 27 goals.
In a second match, goals from Karim Adeyemi (41) and Dutchman Ian Maatsen (90) gave Dortmund a valuable victory at the expense of Union Berlin, fourth last season.
“We were a little sleepy in the first half,” Adeyemi said after the match, “and then we returned to the atmosphere of the match, and we gave a solid performance.”
The “yellow and black” team maintained fourth place, one point behind Leipzig, fifth, and coach Edin Terzic’s team regained its balance, after losing to Hoffenheim 2-3 last week.
For its part, Union Berlin, which currently ranks fourteenth in the Bundesliga standings with 25 points, suffered its first loss in four matches (a draw and two wins).
On the other hand, Leipzig demolished its rival Bochum, which had inflicted a resounding loss on Bayern Munich in the previous round with a score of 3-2, before falling to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the last round, with a barrage of goals by Spaniard Dani Olmo (30) and Belgian Loa. Opinda (68), Ukrainian Ivan Ordets (71 own errors), and Danish Yusuf Poulsen (73), while Maximilian Vitek scored for Bochum with his only goal (7), and the match witnessed the expulsion of Bochum’s player Moritz-Bruni Kvarting (86).
Leipzig will play the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday against Spanish Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
In the last round, Leipzig fell to Bayern with a score of 2-1, regaining the winning tone in the current stage, in light of a strong struggle with Dortmund for the fourth and final place that qualifies for the prestigious continental competition.
