Stuttgart East or Degerloch? Plieningen or Botnang? There has always been competition between the districts of Stuttgart. A Twitter user wanted to clarify once and for all which is the best district in Stuttgart – and started a vote under the hashtag #district championship. It was structured in a tournament format and ran over several days, there was a group phase, a knockout round, a duel for third place – there were more than 12,000 votes in total. In the end the winner was: Bad Cannstatt; Stuttgart’s most populous district relegated Stuttgart-West to second place in the final.
Just one of many controversial decisions that, due to the nature of Twitter, was heatedly debated right below the polls:
Third and fourth place went to Stuttgart-Ost and Degerloch. Here is a table of all duels, placements and voting results:
It is clear that the voting, despite lively participation, does not have a representative character. The Twitter algorithm as to who received the polls at all is hardly transparent – nevertheless, the duels were shared dozens of times, so that the district championship should also have moved out of the inventor’s immediate bubble. Nevertheless, the Stuttgart Twitter community remains a special one and, at least in Germany, Twitter is still considered a rather niche social network.
The initiator comments on the survey
Nevertheless, everyone involved in the campaign apparently had fun. “Thank you Photoshop and poll god! What a party! All glory to Cannstatt!” said one comment after the result was announced on Tuesday. “It was great, even if the winners were undeserved. Thank you for aligning. Great!” said another user. The Stadtpalais Stuttgart also congratulated the victorious Bad Cannstatt:
“Parki”, as the organizer of the tournament calls himself on Twitter and, according to his profile, deals with “Stuttgart, football and practical jokes”, wants to remain incognito, but is overwhelmed by the echo of his obsession. He told our newspaper what was behind the campaign: “I came up with the idea when I discovered a survey about soccer jerseys on another account.” Since Twitter likes to celebrate its own neighborhood, Parki thought that one which could also be transferred to city districts.
Those who missed the Twitter Borough Championship can probably look forward to a repeat next year: “There will probably be a repeat annually if there is interest on Twitter.”
