In the early hours of last Tuesday (13), due to the rain, meteors Perseids, a camera in the Lake Ohrid region of Macedonia, captured images of a fireball crossing the sky. The video shows, in seconds, the recording of the falling meteor.
Perseids is one of the biggest meteor showers of the year, seen every year between the middle of July and the end of August. In 2024, for example, it reached its peak around the evening of August 11 and the morning of the 12th.
These meteors are caused by Earth’s passage through ice and rock debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. The star passed close to the Earth for the last time in 1992. Therefore, when they reach the Earth’s atmosphere, they burn up and form “shooting stars”.
Usually, most meteors are the size of grains of sand. However, some larger pieces may generate “fireballs” (or “fireball”) in the sky, as seen in Macedonia.
Fireball in the midst of the Perseids
Photographer Stojan Stojanovski started setting up the camera network in 2018 with the help of local businesses. He took the initiative to promote tourism in the area. to the Space.comhe said he hopes the installation of 180-degree cameras will give him and the local Ohrid Astronomical Society an even better view of the night sky.
“I hope that cameras with a 180-degree field of view will catch more meteors in the future,” he said. In addition, he pointed out that there are some forest fires in the area and it is “difficult to get good places to find in the mountains”.
At the beginning of the peak, on the 11th, photographer Stojan Stojanovski also captured a picture of the Perseid meteor over the lake, with the forest fires lit visible in the distance. Watch the video of the fireball crossing the sky:
