Stunning Blue Moon Spotted in Hesse: Closest Proximity to Earth in Years

Fantastic “Blue Moon” over Hesse

At the end of August, the full moon showed itself in its full splendor during the night – for the second time this month. As at the beginning of August, the full moon was particularly close to the earth this time and therefore looked a bit larger than usual. According to the Association of Star Friends, the moon reached its closest proximity to the earth at 3.36 a.m. this morning. And that could also be seen here in Hesse, for example in Offenbach and in Gründau (Main-Kinzig). Many thanks for the photos to Günther Appich and Cornelia Cavelmann!

It was possible for the full moon to appear twice in August because the cycle between two full moons is 29.5 days, but August has 31 days. Two full moons in a calendar month are rare, the second of which is called the “Blue Moon” in the US – which has nothing to do with the color blue – the next time there will not be until May 31, 2026.
