Scientists have studied 171,000 Britons and found that those who like to drink coffee with sugar regularly have a third less chance of dying in their youth, writes The Sun.
Dr. Dan Liu of the University of Southern Medicine in China said the study found that adults who drank moderate amounts of coffee with sugar each day were about 30% less likely to die than those who did not.
In the study, coffee users were at a lower risk of cancer and heart disease. Instant, ground or decaffeinated versions of coffee were associated with a lower risk of death.
The study looked at middle-aged people in the UK between 2009 and 2018 to see how likely they are to die within seven years.
Drinking any amount of unsweetened coffee reduced the risk by 16-21%, the researchers found. 1.5 – 3.5 cups a day with a teaspoon of sugar reduced the risk by 29 – 31%.
The study was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine and is the first to show that sweet coffee can be healthy. However, it is warned that extra milk and sugars in your drinks or drinking more than 4.5 cups of sweetened coffee every day can be harmful.
It is best to drink no more than three cups of unsweetened coffee a day, but sweetened – no more than two cups a day.
