United States, August 3, 2024 (ATB Digital).- People who smoke and vape together are four times more likely to develop lung cancer than those who smoke alone, according to an article published July 4 in the Journal of Oncology Research and Therapy.
Researchers analyzed conventional cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use in 4,975 people with lung cancer compared with a control group of 27,294 people without cancer. All of the people in the study had been treated in Columbus, Ohio, and had the same distribution of age, sex, and race.
The results showed that the risk of developing lung cancer was four times higher among people who combined vaping and smoking compared to those who smoked alone. Vaping combined with cigarette smoking was also found to be eight times more common in people with lung cancer compared to the control group of people without lung cancer.
“This study presents clear evidence that vaping, in addition to smoking, may increase the risk of lung cancer. This is especially concerning given the rate of youth and young adults using these products,” he claimed Marisa Bittoni, co-author of the research.
