[메디컬투데이=최재백 기자] A study suggests that statins may be helpful for older male patients with chronic kidney disease.

Research results showing that statins may be helpful for elderly male patients with chronic kidney disease were published in the academic journal ‘JAMA Network Open’.

Among the data from 17,609 U.S. veterans aged 65 or older, the research team focused on patients with stage 3 or 4 moderate chronic kidney disease and followed the participants for 3.6 years.

The average age of the entire cohort at the time of diagnosis of chronic kidney disease was 76.9 years, 99% were men, and among 17,609 people, 2,924 patients with chronic kidney disease were taking statins.

As a result of the analysis, the research team reported that the overall mortality rate of patients with chronic kidney disease who took statins was reduced by 9%. They said that taking statins also reduced the frequency of major cardiovascular side effects, but the difference was not statistically significant.

Subsequently, they evaluated that a randomized controlled clinical trial should be conducted to determine whether there are any additional side effects or risks that statins may cause in patients with chronic kidney disease.

In particular, they said that unlike the elderly population aged 75 or older, who are at the highest risk of cardiovascular disease, were usually excluded from past clinical trials, the ongoing PREVENTABLE clinical trial is analyzing the efficacy of statins in the elderly population aged 75 or older. reported.

Experts expected that statins could suppress NK-κB activity at the molecular level by activating the AMPK pathway, a major inflammation control mechanism, and thereby reduce the mortality rate of all chronic diseases accompanied by inflammation, including chronic kidney disease.

However, they do question whether the use of statins will be effective for other chronic diseases accompanied by inflammation, such as the side effects of statins that may cause muscle damage or diabetes, which may make a difference in their effect on mortality from cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease. He cautioned that it is unknown.
