Milk is a healthy food. Collagen, calcium, and vitamin B2, a type of protein contained in milk, strengthen bones and teeth, aid growth, and maintain skeletal health. It is especially rich in calcium, making it an essential food for growing children.

Milk also helps lower the risk of high blood pressure. This is thanks to potassium, magnesium, and various other micronutrients. There are also studies showing that drinking low-fat milk can help prevent diabetes in people with pre-diabetes.

Milk also improves athletic performance. Drinking milk after exercise can have the same effect as drinking a sports drink. According to nutritionists, this is because milk contains 13 important nutrients, including calcium and protein. In particular, whey and casein help increase muscle mass and relieve fatigue after exercise.

Regarding the health effects of milk, research has shown that women in particular should drink more milk than men. This is what a research team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found after four years of observation of 888 men and 1,260 women.

The research team investigated how often these men and women, aged 45 to 79, consumed dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, and examined their joint condition. The research team specifically examined joint health by measuring the width of the joint space, which is a cause of arthritis. The wider the joint space, the more likely it is to develop osteoarthritis, which is the most common symptom of arthritis.

The results of the study showed that the more people get into the habit of drinking milk, the smaller the joint space becomes. In particular, the greatest improvement was seen in women who went from not drinking milk to three glasses a week.

What is noteworthy is that women who consumed a lot of cheese, on the contrary, showed widening of joint space. Also, yogurt had no significant effect. It is also interesting that the improvement in joint space width due to milk consumption was not observed in men.

The results of this study (Milk Consumption and Progression of Medial Tibiofemoral Knee Osteoarthritis: Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative) were published in Arthritis Care and Research, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).
