Study shows little space for “non-whites” in French cinema

The Collective 50/50, which promotes equity in the audiovisual field in France, analyzed the 115 feature films with the highest production budget or the most box office success in 2019, a research that identifies the protagonism of the characters played by white actors in 1981 by hundred.

According to the research, 7.5 percent fit the classification of “Arab”, 7.2 of “black” and just 1.5 of “Asian.”

The study entitled Cinégalités, in addition to showing the scarce presence of minorities in the central roles of the films, reveals another equally disturbing phenomenon: they assume marginal roles, such as criminals and delinquents.

In this sense, the study confirms that negative characters for their social behavior are usually linked to foreigners.

The survey carried out by university students also shows the distortion between cinema and reality in terms of social class, since a main role in two is a manager or cadre, while these are 20 percent of society.

On the other hand, 18 percent of French people have some kind of disability, but human beings with physical, sensory or motor limitations are only the protagonists in about three percent of the films.
