Study Shows Link Between Vision Problems and Higher Prevalence of Dementia

Al-Marsad newspaper: A new study published in JAMA Ophthalmology reveals that people with vision problems may be more likely to develop dementia.

vision problems

The study showed a link between all types of vision problems – distance sharpness, close sharpness and contrast sensitivity – and a higher prevalence of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Distance acuity (visual acuity) is a measure of the clarity or acuity of vision from a distance of 20 feet, according to the American Optometric Association. This is usually tested by having the person read the letters on a Snellen chart (after the Dutch ophthalmologist Herrmann Snellen who developed the chart in 1862).

Vision quality

Close acuity is a measure of how well someone can see something up close. Contrast sensitivity measures a person’s ability to distinguish between an object and the background against which it is set, or between two similar colors.

The results of the study stated that the more types of vision problems a person suffers from, the greater the possibility of dementia.
