The study was published in the Christmas edition of the British Medical Journal, which annually covers serious topics with a humorous approach. According to emergency physician Elise Tiebie, the use of cola for stuck food is a persistent rumor, which can be found on all kinds of tip websites, but also on Wikipedia. “I have even heard that doctors recommend it,” says professor of gastroenterology Arjan Bredenoord of the Amsterdam UMC.
Narrowing in the esophagus
A piece of food that gets stuck in the esophagus after swallowing can be painful and sometimes prevent people from swallowing saliva. A food chunk is often stuck in a narrowing of the esophagus, caused by a scar as a result of, for example, a tumor or previous inflammation.
No improvement from cola
Stuck food can be dangerous, so finding the right treatment for it is important. “That’s why we wanted to know whether Coke works.” But this new research shows that the situation did not improve after drinking cola. In most cases the food came loose on its own and otherwise the hospital had to perform an endoscopy. In patients who received cola and in people who had to wait, there was improvement in 61 percent of the cases. Using cola may not do any harm, but it also doesn’t do any good.
