Study shows: Aging occurs in two distinct phases – at 44 and 60 years

31. August 2024

A US study has found that human aging progresses particularly clearly in two distinct phases: once at around the age of 44 and again around the age of 60. These findings challenge the assumption that aging is a uniform, continuous process.

The research team from Stanford University School of Medicine, in collaboration with scientists from Singapore, examined 108 people aged 25 to 75 from California over a period of seven years. They analyzed molecular and microbial profiles from blood, saliva and other samples.

The results showed that most of the test subjects experienced two significant phases of molecular changes: around the age of 44 and 60. These molecular remodeling spurts may be related to the onset or worsening of pathological changes in the body. The researchers therefore refer to these phases as “age tipping points”. The results were published in the journal “Nature Aging” published.

In the first phase, which begins in the mid-40s, there is a deterioration in alcohol and fat metabolism processes, an increased occurrence of cardiovascular diseases and accelerated muscle loss. In the second phase, which begins around the age of 60, there are changes in sugar metabolism and immune regulation, kidney function becomes more vulnerable and muscle loss increases again.
