Studies have found that 12 minutes of physical exercise can affect the body’s health.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – A new study from the Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) found that short physical exercise can have a significant impact on health. The research team explained in their paper that cardio workout for 12 minutes can affect more than 80 percent of the metabolites circulating in the body.
The head of the Heart Failure section at MGH and the study’s senior author, Gregory Lewis, said it was very surprising for the researchers to see the effect the short exercise had on circulating metabolites. This is because metabolites regulate vital body functions.
“The functions associated with these metabolites include insulin resistance, oxidative stress, vascular reactivity, inflammation, and longevity,” Lewis said. slashgear, Friday (20/11).
The researchers found beneficial changes in the number of circulating metabolites. It is associated with cardiometabolic disease.
The metabolite glutamate, the main metabolite associated with heart disease, diabetes and decreased longevity, fell 29 percent with this brief exercise. Another metabolite affected by short-term exercise is DMGV which is linked to an increased risk of diabetes and liver disease.
MGH researchers have also found that metabolic responses can be modulated by factors other than exercise, including a person’s gender and body mass index. There is the potential that obesity causes partial resistance to the benefits of exercise.
These findings are thought to open the door for blood tests to determine a person’s fitness. This is similar to when we can check kidney and liver function through blood.
