Study says bees ‘scream’ when killed by Murder Hornets

Honeybees “scream” at each other moments before they are slaughtered by the Murder Hornets, according to new research from the Royal Society Open Science.

The sound is made when the bee vibrates its wings and releases a special pheromone from its stomach.

Royal Society research described the previously unknown sound as a “mass cry for collective defence” and said it resembled “screams of alarm, screams of fear and panicked cries of primates, birds and meerkats”.

Scientists have previously captured a large group of Homicide Hornets in Washington State.

“Annoying to hear that!” Study co-author Heather Mattilla Gizmodo said. “It features rapid bursts of high-pitched sound that change unexpectedly in frequency – very loud and loud.”

The Murder Hornet—officially known as the Asian giant hornet—can grow to two inches and is heavily armored. They love to eat natural honey bees, loot hives and feed their defeated young. Several dozen wasps can destroy thousands of honeybee hives in just a few hours during what scientists call the “slaughter phase.”
