Study Reveals Worsening Global Climate Patterns and Impact on Respiratory Health

A new study by a consortium of climate scientists sheds light on worsening global climate patterns and their impact, especially on people suffering from respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

This is reported Online University of Sydney.

The study data indicates that of the 35 major global climate indicators, 20 have reached exceptional values. This includes the release of more than 1 gigatonne of carbon dioxide from forest fires in Canada, 38 days in which global temperatures were 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, and the highest average Earth surface temperature recorded in the last 100,000 years. July.

Dr Thomas Newsome, co-author of the study from the University of Sydney, stressed the urgent need to strengthen global efforts to combat climate change. He noted that it is often economically disadvantaged populations that bear the brunt of the negative impacts. Other studies also indicate that climate change will worsen respiratory problems not only among less affluent demographic groups.

Professor Zorana Jovanovic Andersen, Chair of the Environment and Health Committee of the European Respiratory Society, highlighted the increased vulnerability of patients with respiratory diseases to climate change. The report highlights the negative effects of climate change, such as rising temperatures, increased airborne allergens (pollen and others), increased frequency of extreme weather events leading to severe air pollution, dust storms, heavy rainfall and flooding, which in turn leads to to moisture and mold formation in rooms. Young children and infants whose lungs are not yet fully developed are especially at risk.

The study authors call for increased awareness among respiratory health care providers to mitigate patient exposure and educate about the risks involved. This will help them better protect themselves from the negative effects of climate change.

There was also a discrepancy between air quality standards in the European Union and the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO). The EU is currently reviewing its Ambient Air Quality Directive to bring it in line with WHO recommendations and create a more robust air quality system that helps improve quality of life and mitigate climate change.
