REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The keto diet is one of the most popular diet methods in Indonesia. However, a recent study revealed that a diet that adopts a low-carbohydrate and high-fat diet can be bad for the health of the body.
The study adds to the long list of potential dangers of the keto diet. Researchers from the University of British Columbia in Canada show that diet keto associated with increased rates bad cholesterol in the blood.
It is also associated with a two-fold increased risk of cardiovascular events. Keto dieters can experience chest pain (angina), blocked arteries requiring heart rings, heart attacks, and strokes.
“Our study found that regular consumption of a low-carb, high-fat diet was associated with increased levels of LDL cholesterol, or bad cholesterol, and a higher risk of heart disease,” said lead author Lulia Latan of the University of British Columbia’s Heart and Lung Innovation Center. .
For the study, Latan and his team analyzed 305 participants who compared 1,220 people who ate a standard diet. They define a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet as one that is composed of no more than 25 percent of total daily energy or calories from carbohydrates and more than 45 percent of total daily calories from fat.
Compared to participants on a standard diet, those on the keto diet had much higher levels of LDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein B (apoB). This is a protein that helps carry fat and cholesterol throughout the human body.
“Previous studies have shown that increased apoB may be a better predictor of increased LDL cholesterol for cardiovascular disease risk,” said Latan. Times Now NewsMonday (6/3/2023).
