Study Reveals Surprising Effects of Licorice on Blood Pressure and Heart Health: American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Warns Against Consumption

Some people think that eating licorice lowers blood pressure and improves heart health, but the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition warns against drinking licorice, even small amounts. A surprising fact, but a Swedish study revealed that even small amounts of it also raise blood pressure and affect heart health. The results were published Thursday in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

The main researcher of the study at Linköping University in Sweden, Dr. Peder Gigerstam, said: “Our study found that daily consumption of licorice containing 100 mg of glycyrrhizic acid raises blood pressure in healthy young people.”

He added on the university’s website: “This has not been proven before for such small amounts of licorice,” noting that the results prompt more caution when it comes to recommendations and labeling of foods that contain this ingredient.
