A new study said that the “long-term corona”, whose symptoms persist for months after recovery from the virus, may cause disabilities and serious health problems that exceed those that result from heart disease or cancer.
According to the American “CNN” network, the study looked at the medical records of more than 100,000 veterans in America who were infected with Corona in 2020, as well as the records of more than 5 million people over the age of 60 who were not infected with the virus.
None of the people in the study were vaccinated at the time of their infection because vaccines had not yet been developed.
The researchers used a measure called the “disability life year rate”, which is a measure of the overall disease burden, expressed as the number of years of life lost due to disability, health problems or premature death.
The team found that this number of lost years reached 80 years on the scale for “long-term corona” patients, as they suffered from more than 80 health problems that caused disabilities or health problems for them that lasted for more than two years for some of them.
This means that “long-term corona” creates a greater burden of disability than heart disease or cancer, for which the number of years of life lost due to them on the scale reached about 52 and 50 years, respectively, according to the study.

Among the most prominent health problems that patients with “long-term corona” have suffered from for years are heart problems, blood clots, diabetes, neurological complications, fatigue and mental health problems.
“When I first looked at the results of the study, I was really shocked,” said study author Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, director of the Center for Clinical Epidemiology at the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in St. Louis. We ran the analyzes several times, and came to the same conclusion.”
He added: «Corona is long-term and very disabling, because it affects many different parts of the body. I think we need to understand that corona infection may lead to chronic disease and we have to take it seriously, even when it seems mild.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines “long-term Covid” as suffering from health problems more than 4 weeks after the initial infection appeared. According to research conducted by the health agency, 1 out of every 5 survivors of the virus is between the ages of 18 and 64, and 1 out of every 4 survivors between the ages of 65 and over suffers from a persistent health problem that may be attributed to Corona infection.
