It will come as no surprise that saying goodbye to alcohol is good for your brain. But a recent study from Stanford shows that your brain can even recover miraculously after overuse.
After 7.3 months of not drinking a drop, significant improvements were seen.
Your brain recovers after quitting alcohol
Excessive alcohol consumption reduces the number of connections between your brain cells. The brain also becomes smaller. This can get in the way of your daily life: your memory deteriorates, you think more slowly and your adaptability decreases.
The good news is that the brain recovers quickly, as long as you give up alcohol completely. The study among excessive drinkers shows that the brain made new connections after quitting in the first month. After 7.3 months, the hippocampus was again of a comparable size to that of people who did not drink heavily. This is the part of the brain that is important for learning things and is called forming memories.
Stopping is also good for the rest of your body
No alcohol is also good for the rest of your body. If you stop, your liver will start to function better after a few months. Normalize liver enzymes, which, for example, reduces the risk of liver disease. And the cardiovascular system also benefits. Blood pressure stabilizes and the risk of heart-related problems decreases.
Weight loss can also be a nice bonus. Alcohol contains ’empty calories’ and without these calories losing weight becomes a lot easier. In addition, we can deal better with our emotions if the alcohol has been out of our system for a number of months.
After a few years without alcohol, the health benefits are even greater. It reduces the risk of chronic conditions such as liver disease, pancreatitis and certain types of cancer and the cognitive functions in our brain are improving. This has a beneficial effect on memory and mental agility, among other things.
