Study Reveals Early Warning Signs of Heart Attack Differ for Men and Women

Jakarta

A recent study revealed that the dangerous condition of a heart attack can be detected from the initial symptoms that appear before a heart attack occurs. The symptoms that men and women can recognize can be slightly different.

A cardiac arrest is a condition where the heart suddenly stops beating due to electrical problems in the heart that are triggered by heart rhythm disturbances. This disease can be fatal, so it is important that people know the symptoms that may appear.

A recent study from the Smidt Heart Institute in the United States revealed that women tend to experience shortness of breath the day before, and that men experience chest pain. Palpitations, convulsions, flu-like symptoms affect small subgroups of men and women.

“Using warning signs to effectively alert those who need to call 911 can result in early intervention and prevent impending death. The findings could lead to a new paradigm for preventing sudden cardiac death,” study author Dr. Sumeet Chugh was quoted as saying. from A mirrorTuesday (30/4/2024).

Lancet Digital Health revealed that 50 percent of people who have a sudden heart attack receive important warning signs 24 hours before the condition occurs. Women are more likely to have difficulty breathing, and men are more likely to experience pain.

This research uses data from two large studies, the Prediction of Sudden Death in Multi-Ethnic Communities (PRESTO) study currently underway in Ventura County, California, and the Death Study Sudden Oregon (SUDS) based in Portland, Oregon.

“We started the SUDS study 22 years ago and the PRESTO study eight years ago. These groups have provided valuable learning to the hospital systems that provide care in these communities,” said Dr. Chugh.

The research team looked at the frequency of certain symptoms and their combinations before they had a sudden cardiac arrest, comparing their findings with a control group that also received emergency medical attention.

Dr Chugh said this research could open the door for further research. The plan complements sex-specific warning signs with other features such as clinical profiles and biometric measurements. This is important to improve the accuracy of sudden cardiac arrest prediction.
