Washington | A US study reports that contact lenses used instead of glasses contain deadly chemicals that cause cancer and kidney disease. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance) chemicals are used in contact lens manufacturing. PFAS are substances that cause problems such as cancer, kidney disease, uterine problems, liver disease and autoimmune disorders.
PFAS is a group of 14,000 chemicals that are used in limited amounts in consumer products and do not self-degrade. Its specialty is that it resists water and heat. They are also widely used in clothing, furniture, adhesives, packages, wires etc.
Contact lenses manufactured and distributed in the United States have been found to contain lethal levels of PFAS. According to the report, the chemical was found in various contact glasses at levels ranging from 105 ppm (parts per million) to 20,700 ppm. All contact lenses tested had levels above 100 ppm.
The three lenses with the highest levels of organic fluorine were Alcon Air Optics for Astigmatism (no HydraGlide) (20,000 ppm), Alcon Air Optics Colors with SmartShield Technology (20,700 ppm), and Alcon Total 30 contact lenses for regular use (20,400 ppm). Glasses found to have more PFAS .
Not just contact lenses, but all toilet paper from most regions around the world contains toxic PFAS.
Recent studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that high levels of PFAS consumption can increase cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
