Study Reveals Alarming Rates of Violence in Swiss Upbringing: Calls for Legal Reforms to Protect Children

The University of Freiburg surveyed 1,605 parents about violence in their upbringing. As the “Sunday newspaper» reported, 62 percent of parents said they never used physical violence. Two percent of parents, however, said they beat their children with objects such as a belt. This is likely to affect around 32,000 children in Switzerland. Around ten percent of children receive slaps in the face, which corresponds to around 160,000 children. 48,000 children are given cold showers and around 300,000 receive a slap on the bottom.

Locking up, insults, insults

More than half of parents, 60 percent, use other degrading punishments, such as name-calling, insults, or confinement. The president of the Child Protection Switzerland organization, Yvonne Feri, tells the newspaper that too many children are affected by violence. Feri therefore called for an article in the Civil Code (ZGB) against all violence against children.

Prevent violence against children

It is intended to stipulate that parents should raise their children without the use of physical punishment and other degrading violence. The cantons should ensure that parents and children can seek advice centers if they have difficulties raising children. She believes that the changes to the Civil Code can prevent at least some of the violence against children.
