A large-scale study in the United States pointed out that about 1 in 10 local premature birth cases may be related to excessive exposure of pregnant women to chemicals called phthalates (PAEs). PAEs are one of the plasticizers, often used to soften plastics and are quite common in plastic containers, packaging materials, beauty care and toys. It is considered a hormone disruptor that has the potential to affect the human endocrine system and may be related to obesity, heart disease, fertility and some cancers.

High concentrations of PAEs in the body increase the chance of premature birth by 50%
Researchers analyzed the concentrations of PAEs metabolites in urine samples from more than 5,000 local pregnant women. The results found that compared with the 10% of pregnant women with the lowest PAEs concentrations, the 10% of pregnant women with the highest PAEs concentrations had a 50% increased risk of giving birth before 37 weeks. The researchers then extended the analysis to other countries and found that in 2018 alone, there were nearly 56,000 cases of premature birth that were related to PAEs, accounting for 10% of the total number of premature births in the country that year.
Leonardo Trasande, the lead author of the study and a scholar at NYU Langone Health Center, pointed out that PAEs can affect hormones and may lead to early labor and delivery. Trasande continued that although the relevant research was conducted in the United States, PAEs are so common that 5 to 10% of premature birth cases in most other countries may be related to this chemical. He also estimated that more than 43% of PAEs exposure is through plastics caused, calling on countries to formulate conventions to reduce plastic production.
