Study. People vaccinated against Covid-19, who become infected with Delta, may have a virus level similar to that found in unvaccinated people.

There is ample evidence that vaccines against Covid-19 in the UK provide significant protection against hospitalization and death, but this new analysis indicates that the virus levels of those who become infected with Delta but have already vaccinated, may be similar to the level of virus found in unvaccinated individuals.

There are also fewer data on the transmission of the virus by vaccinated people, the researchers warned, writes The Guardian.

“We do not yet know how transmissible the virus is when it comes in contact with a vaccinated person. For example, these people may have high levels of the virus, but for a shorter period of time, “said Sarah Walker, a professor of medical statistics and epidemiology at Oxford University.

The study also found that the effectiveness of the vaccine against the Delta variant of coronavirus decreased compared to the efficacy of the Alpha variant, which was previously dominant.

The study also did not investigate whether those vaccinated are protected against severe forms of the disease caused by Delta.

“The low incidence of hospitalization suggests that the vaccine protects people, to some extent, from developing a severe form of the disease,” said Dr. Penny Ward, a visiting professor of pharmaceutical medicine at King’s College London.
