Study on Rotavirus Vaccine for Newborns Conducted by Puerto Montt Hospital

The Puerto Montt Hospital is inviting the mothers of newborns to participate in a study on the rotavirus vaccinewhich begins this Monday, July 10.

This is a study on the new vaccine Rotavacdeveloped by the Indian biochemical company Bharat Biotech, carried out by the University of Chileunder the direction of Dr. Miguel O’Ryan and Juan Pablo Torres.

Puerto Montt will be one of the 10 centers where this study will be carried out nationwide, which will have a total of 5,700 research participants.

Dr. Loreto Twele, director of the Vaccine Research Center at Hospital de Puerto Montt, explained that “this It is a randomized double-blind study. (that is, half are given the vaccine and the other half a placebo), in which we are going to invite newborns and infants to participate from two months of ageand together with their vaccines from the National Immunization Program, we are going to offer them to receive this vaccine“.

They are oral drops that are going to receive three doses at two, four and six monthsdirectly in the mouth, and a follow-up that will last until the child is one year old and two months of age, and throughout this period they will be observed if they have episodes of diarrhea, and before any episode a study will be done to determine if they have rotavirus or not,” he explained.

For his part, the director of the Puerto Montt Hospital, Manuel Gonzalezexpressed being “proud that our team is developing this research, which obviously will be a contribution to science and public health“, with which it seeks to “verify its effectiveness and thus propose its inclusion in the National Immunization Program. In this way, we will make a contribution to all infants in the country to prevent this disease and its complications.”
