Study of corona vaccine in kidney patients | 1Limburg

Maastricht UMC + is investigating the effect of corona vaccines in kidney patients.

Their condition makes them extra vulnerable to the corona virus, says Maastricht UMC +, but it is not clear whether the available vaccines are suitable for people with kidney failure.

Kidney failure
The effect of the available corona vaccines has been extensively studied by the pharmaceutical industry, but their effect in patients with severe renal failure and in patients who have undergone kidney transplantation has hardly been included in those studies. Kidney patients use medication that suppresses the immune system. This makes vaccines less effective, because they make use of the immune system.

Less effective
“It is important that this research is carried out because vaccinations may be less effective in dialysis and kidney transplant patients,” says Marc Hemmelder, research leader of Maastricht UMC +.

Safety
According to Hemmelder, it is of great importance for the assessment of the applicability of corona vaccines in kidney patients to gain knowledge about the efficacy and safety of vaccination in this specific group.

Order
The study that is being coordinated from Maastricht is part of six studies, which are carried out on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. In all cases, this concerns studies into the effect of corona vaccines in vulnerable groups.

It is not yet clear when the Maastricht investigation will be completed.
