Study: Moderna’s COVID-19 Vaccine Is Safe and Shows Positive Reactions in Older Parents

Overall, the team found that in older adults who received two injections of 100 microgram doses 28 days apart, the vaccine produced an immune response roughly in line with that seen in younger adults.

Moderna has already tested higher doses in its large Phase III trial, the final stage before seeking emergency authorization or approval.

Side effects including headache, fatigue, body aches, chills and injection site pain, are considered mild to moderate.

In at least two cases, volunteers experienced severe reactions.

A person develops grade three fever, which is classified as 102.2 degrees Fahrenheit (39 degrees Celsius) or more, after receiving a lower dose of the vaccine. Other fatigue develops so badly that it temporarily prevents daily activities, Anderson said.

Usually, side effects occur soon after receiving the vaccine and are resolved quickly, he said.

“This is similar to what many older adults experience with high-dose influenza vaccines,” said Anderson.

“They may feel unwell or have a fever.”
