Study in Bucharest Clinic Reveals Alarming Levels of Vitamin D Deficiency Among Patients

An internal study carried out in a clinic in Bucharest highlighted alarmingly low levels of vitamin D among patients, following the laboratory analysis of 25-OH-vitamin D. The study was carried out in the period 2022-2023, involving a number of 210 participants.

The results of the study carried out by the Smart Nutrition Clinic showed that a significant proportion of patients – 79% – had a vitamin D deficiency. Out of all of them, about 50% had a vitamin D deficiency, while the rest, up to 79%, had insufficient levels to maintain an optimal state of health, according to a press release.

The study also reveals a correlation between weight status and the level of vitamin D in the blood. Among patients with normal weight (body mass index BMI < 25 kg/m2), doar 25% aveau carenţă de vitamina D. În comparaţie, 45% dintre pacienţii supraponderali (IMC între 25 şi 29,9 kg/m2) prezentau carenţă de vitamina D, iar în cazul pacienţilor obezi (IMC > 30 kg/m2), over 60% of them had vitamin D deficiency.

Thus, vitamin D deficiency is more common in overweight and obese people, compared to people of normal weight.

“Overweight and obese people frequently associate a low level of vitamin D in the blood for at least three reasons: its sequestration in adipose tissue, inadequate intake and reduced synthesis in the skin due to lack of exposure to the sun. Many patients with obesity avoid this because of the negative image they have of their body”, says Dr. Mihaela Posea, doctor specializing in diabetes, nutrition and metabolic diseases, doctor of medicine, SCOPE certificate.

Regarding the percentage of patients with an optimal level of vitamin D, the results were as follows: 33% of normal weight patients recorded an optimal level of vitamin D, compared to 21% of overweight patients and 15% of patients suffering from obesity.

“The study carried out in our clinic emphasizes the importance of raising awareness of vitamin D deficiency, considered a public health problem given its magnitude. At the same time, the results of our patients demonstrate that, although it is a worrying phenomenon, vitamin D deficiency can be easily corrected with the help of individualized recommendations from specialists”, said Andreea Vasile, director of the clinic that carried out the study.
