Study Identifies 15 Early Signs of Dementia Before Age 65, Published in JAMA Neurology

Early dementia is considered to occur before age 65.

In the UK, scientists analyzed data from 356 thousand people and identified 15 signs that caused early dementia – up to 65 years of age.

The results of the study were published in the journal JAMA Neurology.

The starting group included people with an average age of 54.6 years who did not have dementia. They were followed until they reached 65 years of age.

Neuroscientist Stevie Hendricks from Maastricht University, a participant in the experiment, said that the observations lasted for more than eight years. During this period, 485 deaths were recorded.

The researchers identified 39 factors to find a connection with the development of the disease, of which 15 turned out to be significant.

This is a low level of education and low socio-economic status, social isolation. An interesting conclusion about alcohol is that both alcoholism and complete abstinence from alcohol have a negative impact.

Also leading to early dementia were the presence of two e4 alleles of apolipoprotein E, vitamin D deficiency, and high levels of C-reactive protein.

Dementia is accelerated by hearing loss, orthostatic hypotension, stroke, diabetes, heart disease and depression. A decrease in hand grip strength was also a sign.
