Study Finds Tingling As a Symptoms of Covid-19

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

tingling be a symptom Covid-19. This was found in a recent study conducted by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine.

Not only tingling, patients also experience pain and numbness. All three are symptoms of peripheral neuropathy.

Simon Haroutounian, head of clinical research at the Washington University Pain Center and the research team on the study, said that some viral infections are associated with peripheral neuropathy.

“Some viral infections, such as HIV and herpes zoster, are associated with peripheral neuropathy because viruses can damage nerves,” Haroutounian said. Washington University School of Medicine.

The team conducted research on patients undergoing Covid-19 tests at Washington University Medical Campus from March 16, 2020 to January 12, 2021. Of the 1,556 study participants, 542 people were confirmed positive for Covid-19, while 1,014 people were negative.

Then as many as 29 percent of those who were confirmed positive reported symptoms of neuropathy at diagnosis. In addition, it turns out that the tingling of Covid-19 symptoms is also able to last for 2 weeks to 3 months in 6-7 percent of patients.

This finding, according to Haroutounian, strengthens the possibility that the virus could be involved in causing symptoms of peripheral neuropathy.

“In the case of HIV, we didn’t realize that it was causing neuropathy for several years after the AIDS epidemic started. As a result, many people go undiagnosed because of the pain associated with the problem,” he said.

The research has been published in the journal Pain. He said further research was needed to replicate the findings. What’s more, it is difficult to determine the variant that causes the tingling of this Covid symptom.

“So we wanted to follow up on some of the patients who had persistent neurological symptoms and learn about what was causing their pain so that we could better diagnose and treat these patients going forward,” he said.
