Study Finds the Spread of Corona on Air-Conditioned Buses

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

A case study finds evidence of spread corona virus through the air inside bus. A man was found to have transmitted the causative corona virus Covid-19 to dozens of other people while boarding a bus in China.

The study, published in early September, noted that the man was transmitting the virus, even to people who were not sitting near him. Buses are known to be poorly ventilated with air conditioning in them.

Study published in JAMA Internal Medicine It investigates the threat of airborne infection by observing passengers traveling for 50 minutes in the Chinese City of Ningbo. An investigation was carried out in January, before people were required to wear masks.

The man is known to have previously been in contact with residents living in Wuhan, the location where the SARS-CoV-2 virus first spread. He did not show symptoms such as cough when the group traveled.

Launch Medical Xpress, researchers managed to map the seats of other passengers. Testing results found that 23 of the 68 passengers were confirmed positive.

The researchers also noted that the air conditioner only recirculated the air inside the bus. This is thought to have contributed to the spread of the virus.

“Investigations show that in a closed environment with recirculating air, SARS-CoV-2 is a highly contagious pathogen,” write the investigators.

Previously, a number of studies had found evidence of airborne transmission of the corona virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) itself has stated that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted airborne in July.

In its official statement, WHO defines airborne transmission as the spread of a virus caused by aerosols that float in the air for long distances and time. Aerosols are respiratory droplets that are so small that they can stick to the air.

This then became the attention of many people. The public is urged to be more careful by continuing to use masks when in closed spaces with poor ventilation to avoid the spread of corona through the air such as on buses.
