It’s not a secret anymore, sleep have an important role for health. Recent studies have even found that sleep quality also determines a person’s ability to lose weight.
Launch Medical News Todaya study conducted by researchers from the University of Copenhagen showed that poor and limited sleep quality increases the risk of metabolic disorders, weight gain, and obesity.
Lack of quality sleep has also been shown to increase the desire to eat high-calorie and high-carbohydrate foods that are linked to weight gain. The study found that lack of quality sleep can also undermine people’s efforts to maintain weight loss after dieting.
This study used data from a randomized placebo-controlled trial of S-LiTE. The researchers studied sleep quality and duration in 195 obese adults. The participants followed a low-calorie diet for 8 weeks and lost an average of 12 percent of body weight.
The Relationship Between Sleep and Weight Loss
A professor of health psychology Jane Odgen who was not involved in the study said sleep was related to body weight. Whether it’s lack of sleep can be the cause of weight gain or weight causes lack of sleep.
He also responded to the results of the study. According to him, the first part of the study showed weight loss was associated with improved sleep quality. However, there was no control and randomization group in this section.
“So it’s probably not weight loss and could be something else, like time, studying, or eating more fruit and vegetables, apart from weight loss,” he said.
Another long-term study also showed that obese adults who slept less than six hours a night experienced an increase in body mass index (BMI) of 1.1 kilograms/m2.
In comparison, overweight adults who achieved better sleep quality could lower their BMI by 0.16 kilograms/m2.
