Study Finds Optimal Room Temperature for Better Sleep Varies by Age, According to Scientists

The results were published in the journal Science of the Total Environment (STE). It was previously thought that most people should sleep between 16°C and 18°C. According to many somnologists, sleeping in a cool room promotes the production melatonin – “youth hormone”, improves the quality of rest and reduces the risk of developing mental disorders.

However, according to British scientists, such sleeping conditions are only suitable for young people. This is because as people age, they become less active, which can lead to less heat being produced while they sleep. In a study of 50 older adults’ sleep over nearly 11,000 nights, scientists found that the optimal temperature for a good night’s rest ranged from 20°C to 25°C.

At the same time, a clinically significant decrease in sleep efficiency by 5-10% occurs when the temperature rises to 25°C-30°C.
