“Is it true that Germans don’t tip?” According to a survey, the residents of Munich do well on this question at least.

Munich – Doubtful honor for the state capital: according to a recent study München one of the “rudest cities in Germany”. In November 2022, employees of the Preply language learning platform surveyed over 1,500 residents in the 20 largest cities in Germany: “How polite are the people in Europe’s largest economy? And is it true that Germans don’t tip?”

At least the latter cannot be blamed on the people of Munich. This is the conclusion reached by the makers of the study. On the nationwide tip scale, the Isar metropolis occupies second place behind Bremen. In other areas, Munich fares significantly worse.

Deep in smartphone and dismissive of strangers: residents of Munich are considered “rude”

Preply identified the fact that people use their smartphones in public as “the most common form of impolite behavior in Germany”. In Bavaria’s state capital, the bad habit also seems to be particularly well established, as the survey results show. Another accusation against the Munich residents: they sometimes behaved extremely dismissively towards strangers. Will the “Mia san Mia” gene propagated by record champions FC Bayern come through?

In the Preply overall ranking, Munich occupies sixth place with an “average rudeness value” of 5.92. The makers of the study present their data analysis on a scale from one (extremely polite) to ten (very rude). Essen bears the unfortunate title of the rudest city in Germany. According to the Preply analysis, it makes sense: “Due to the large number of students in Essen, it is no surprise that many people are engrossed in their smartphones in public. In addition, the people in Essen often show a closed body language.” The makers of the study are silent on the possible motives. Dresden and Frankfurt follow in second and third place.

Study lists deficits in Munich: “Rude to service staff”

Curious: Bochum emerged as the most polite city in Germany. A train ride from the Ruhr area city to Essen takes less than ten minutes. The makers of the study conclude: “Geographical location does not appear to affect this rating.”

Looking at the detailed results, other sub-areas catch the eye in which Munich obviously has some catching up to do. They aren’t particularly good at “letting people through in public” and have been noticed time and again for being “rude to service staff.” A clearly A more uplifting result for Munich produced a curious toilet ranking from 2021. However, there was an explicit warning against visiting the main train station: “Tourists will not be happy there”.
