Women infected with strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) and suffering from metabolic syndrome are three times more likely to die prematurely than other women. The corresponding study was published in the journal PLOS One, reports
gazeta.ru.

The researchers used data from 3,274 women. Patients who suffered from both high-risk HPV and metabolic syndrome had a 2.6 times higher risk of death.

In addition, more than a quarter of women with metabolic syndrome were infected with high-risk HPV. This may mean that metabolic syndrome increases the risk of infection. Scientists believe this may be due to a weakened immune response and chronic inflammation, but only more research can confirm the hypothesis.

The human papillomavirus has more than 200 known strains. Most are not dangerous, but a few are responsible for almost all cases of cervical cancer. Previous studies have shown that women with metabolic syndrome (large waist circumference, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and other symptoms) are more likely to be infected with HPV. People with metabolic syndrome are approximately 65% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and have a 25% increased risk of death.

The scientists added that vaccination protects against the most dangerous known strains of HPV and minimizes the risk of cervical cancer.
