Phenomenon of ‘residual’ symptoms of infection COVID-19 or long COVID can be experienced by children. It’s just that the number according to the study is not as much as in the adult population.
Researchers from King’s College London, England, found out after analyzing data from 1,734 children aged 5-17 years who had been infected with COVID-19. It was found that less than four percent of children reported symptoms after four weeks and only about two percent had symptoms until eight weeks.
In comparison, another study by researchers at Imperial College London found at least 37.7 per cent of adult patients could experience symptoms COVID-19 to more than 12 weeks.
The most commonly reported symptoms of long COVID in children are headaches and fatigue. Other symptoms were also reported ranging from loss of sense of smell to sore throat.
One of the researchers, Emma Duncan, said the message parents could take was not to underestimate the complaints of children who may have just recovered from COVID-19. It could be a symptom of long COVID.
“Can children experience long-term symptoms of COVID-19? The answer is yes, but it’s probably not much and usually will heal on its own,” Emma said as quoted by the BBC, Wednesday (4/8/2021).
“Children can experience long-term symptoms due to any disease. Therefore we need to really pay attention to children who fall ill, regardless of whether the disease is COVID-19 or not,” concluded Emma.
