LIVE Techno – Space on the International Space Station (ISS) contains more hazardous chemical particles than the median value on Earth, according to a new study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology Letters.
The findings shed light on the types and amounts of ‘Persistent Organic Contaminants’ found in dust samples taken from the ISS, highlighting the potential for carrying such contaminants to the low Earth’s surface.
The study says that the ISS air contains higher than average levels of flame retardant compounds such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardant (NBFR), and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD).
Higher levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are chemical elements released by burning hydrocarbon fuels, were also detected there according to the Tech Spot website, Monday, August 21, 2023.
The study also showed that the ISS dust was tainted with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are highly carcinogenic chemical compounds banned in the US by the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976.
PFAS, PFOA, and other chemical products were also found in greater quantities than the median values detected in US homes and many European countries.
