Study Finds Heart Damage in Covid-19 Survivors

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Recent studies show the impact of the virus Covid-19 to heart. Researchers found heart damage in Covid-19 survivors.

The research, published in the journal Nature, is the first major study to analyze the impact of Covid-19 on cardiovascular health.

Researchers analyzed more than 11 million health records in the United States a year after contracting COVID-19.

As a result, researchers found an increased risk of 20 different heart and blood vessel diseases. This number is far more than those who do not suffer from Covid-19. Risks for these diseases include heart attack, arrhythmia, stroke, transient ischemic attack, heart failure, inflammatory heart disease, pulmonary embolism, and deep vein thrombosis.

Researchers found that people infected with Covid-19 had a 72 percent higher risk of heart failure than people who were not positive for Covid-19.

“This is clear evidence of long-term heart and blood vessel damage. Similar things can happen in the brain and other organs that result in the typical symptoms of Long Covid, including brain fog,” said researcher Ziyad Al-Aly from Washington University, quoted from Science.

The risk of heart damage is the same in people who have comorbidities such as diabetes, obesity, smoking and those who do not have comorbidities.

“We found an increased risk of cardiovascular problems in the elderly and young, in people with diabetes and without diabetes, in people with obesity and in people without obesity, in people who smoke and who have never smoked,” said Al-Aly.

Researchers don’t know for sure how the coronavirus can cause damage to the heart and blood vessels. The temporary assumption is that heart damage in Covid-19 survivors has the same root cause as other long Covid symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue, and loss of smell.

Researchers suggest that every Covid-19 survivor regularly checks their heart condition and starts a healthy lifestyle to maintain health.
