Caffeine is something that many people really need to start the day. For coffee lovers, a cup of espresso can help them overcome sleepiness in the morning.

However, a new study finds that drinking one shot Espresso per day can also help fight disease Alzheimer.

Copying Medical Dailyresearchers from the University of Verona in Italy found that whole espresso extracts can inhibit the aggregation of proteins associated with Alzheimer’s.

“Recent studies have shown that coffee may also exert beneficial effects against certain neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s,” said lead author of the study, Professor Mariapina D’Onofrio.

“Although the exact mechanism that causes this condition is still unclear, it is thought that a protein called tau plays an important role.”

Tau protein helps stabilize brain structure in healthy people.

However, with excess buildup, clumps called tau fibrils form in the brain. Tau fibrils are considered a pathological hallmark of several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease.

As the fibrils build up in the brain, the patient will start showing symptoms such as memory loss, poor judgment, wandering, and mood swings.

It is estimated that more than six million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s. According to some researchers, preventing buildup is key to reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s.

Espresso is a method of brewing coffee, originating in Italy, by pressing boiling water to distribute finely ground coffee under pressure.

In a study published in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry on Wednesday (19/7), researchers initially examined the molecular composition of espresso coffee extract and identified its main components.

They then conducted an experiment in vitro and in cells to evaluate the impact of coffee on brain regions.

The results of the study revealed that whole coffee extract, caffeine and genistein had biological properties in preventing aggregation, condensation and seeding activity in tau repeat areas.

The espresso compound not only prevents tau build-up, but is also able to bind tau fibrils that have already been formed.

With increasing concentration of espresso extract, the tau fibrils became shorter. The most dramatic effects were found with the use of whole espresso extracts.

Researchers hope this research will pave the way for designing bioactive compounds that can fight neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s.

Coffee itself is known to be rich in antioxidants and plant chemicals that reduce inflammation. Regular coffee consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of premature death, protecting against type 2 diabetes, heart and liver disease, and some cancers.

“We have presented a large amount of evidence that espresso coffee is a natural source of compounds that exhibit beneficial properties in improving tau-associated pathologies,” the researchers said.
