Using laser detection, scientists found that each liter contains an average of 240,000 particles of these materials.
According to the study, the health effects of people’s exposure to chemicals in plastic include: damage to the nervous system, decreased fertility, cardiovascular disease, hormonal dysfunction, and liver and lung cancer.
Nanoplastic materials
“Previously this was just a dark, uncharted area, but there is a huge world of nanoplastics to be studied,” said report co-author Wei Min, of Columbia University.
He continued: “Studying nanoplastics is important because the smaller things are, the easier it is for them to get inside us.”
