Study Finds Chinese CoronaVac Vaccine Reduces COVID-19 Mortality by 97% Against Pfizer’s 80% | International | News

The report clarifies that the figures are preliminary and “should be interpreted with caution.”

The Chinese vaccine against COVID-19 CoronaVac reduces mortality from this disease by 97%, while the American Pfizer does so by 80%, according to the preliminary results of a study published this Thursday and carried out among the Uruguayan population.

“The reduction in mortality from COVID-19, having elapsed more than 14 days since the last dose of the vaccine, is 97% for Coronavac and 80% for Pfizer”, states the ‘Study of effectiveness of vaccination against SARS-CoV- 2 in Uruguay in 2021 ‘, carried out by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP).

The report indicates that, of the total number of people fully immunized with Coronavac as of May 25 (712,716), 5,360 tested positive for coronavirus.

Among them, 19 required hospitalization in ICU and 6 died.

Likewise, of the total number of people fully immunized with Pfizer on the same date (149,329), 691 were infected with covid, only one required hospitalization in CTI and 8 died. The report clarifies that, in this case, they were all over 80 years of age.

In percentages, the reduction of cases with the Sinovac laboratory vaccine is 57%, and with Pfizer it is 75%. Meanwhile, in hospitalizations in intensive care units, the report scored 95% effectiveness for CoronaVac and 99% for Pfizer.

The study clarifies that the figures are preliminary and “should be interpreted with caution, since it does not take into account the age of the people, their comorbidities and high exposure groups”, such as health personnel.

These statistical adjustments will be communicated in future reports.

Another example in the management of the pandemic, the country of 3.5 million inhabitants, which never resorted to confinement and keeps a large part of its activities open, is going through the worst health moment.

The government of President Luis Lacalle Pou is betting all its chips on vaccination, which has been progressing intensely since it began on March 1.

Currently, 47% of the population has already received the first dose of vaccines and 28% the second. (I)
