The total student debt in our country has risen to almost 26 billion euros. This is a doubling from 2015, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported on Thursday. It also appears that the average student debt of (former) students at the beginning of this year was 700 euros more than the previous year.
Since the introduction of the loan system in 2015, student debt has risen on average to almost € 16,000. Total student debt is increasing every year and is now twice as high as in 2015.
People between the ages of 25 and 30 had the largest student debt earlier this year, with men’s debt often slightly higher than women’s.
Almost one in ten Dutch people (1.6 million) currently carry a student loan. There are as many as a year ago. It is the first time in years that the number of Dutch students on student loans has not increased.
Sometimes it comes in small quantities. At 8 percent, for example, less than 500 euros was exceptional. But the number of (former) students with high student debt has increased this year. At the beginning of 2022, nearly 300,000 people had at least € 30,000 in student debt. That’s 180,000 more than in 2015.
