Study: Black Coffee May Lower Your Risk of Heart Failure

The addition of milk, sugar, or cream can negate the benefits of black coffee for the heart.

Licensed dietitian Penny Kris-Etherton says, although it can’t prove that causality, it’s interesting to remember that all three of these studies show that drinking coffee is associated with a reduced risk of heart failure. “Coffee can be part of a healthy diet if it is consumed without added sugar and high fat dairy products, such as cream,” said the former chair of the American Heart Association’s Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Council Leadership Committee.

The study, published in the journal AHA Circulation: Heart Failure, analyzed the original self-reported diet information from the Framingham Heart Study. The study, which began in 1948, involved more than 5,000 people diagnosed with heart disease who lived in Framingham, Massachusetts. The research has followed these people and their descendants for 72 years or for three generations.

This new study uses cutting-edge analytical tools from the AHA’s Precision Medicine Platform to compare Framingham’s data with atherosclerosis risk in community studies, longitudinal studies, multisite, biracial studies, and cardiovascular health studies for 10 years. long study of cardiovascular risk in adults over 65 years.

In the Framingham Heart and Cardiovascular Health study, compared to people who didn’t drink coffee, this analysis found the risk of heart failure over time decreased between 5-12 percent for each cup of coffee consumed each day. However, their analysis found that when people drank two or more cups of black coffee a day, the risk decreased by about 30 percent.

“The association between caffeine and a reduced risk of heart failure is striking,” said senior author Dr. David Kao, who is also medical director of the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora.

He said coffee and caffeine are often seen by the general public as bad for the heart because people associate them with palpitations, high blood pressure and more. “The consistent association between increased caffeine consumption and a decreased risk of heart failure changes that assumption,” said Kao.

All of these studies were conducted for black coffee. However, nowadays many people add high calorie dairy products, sugar, flavorings, or creams. It might be negating the benefits of black coffee for heart health. The way you brew coffee can also have an impact on health consequences.

Caffeine can be dangerous if it is consumed in excess by certain populations. High levels of coffee consumption (more than four cups) during pregnancy are associated with low birth weight, preterm birth and stillbirth.

Previous studies have suggested that people with sleep problems or uncontrolled diabetes should check with their doctor before consuming daily caffeine. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the benefits of black coffee for the heart do not apply to children and adolescents.
