TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A study conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, United States, revealed that video game action-packed can make the gamer or its players better at some tasks. These games can help teach players to become faster learners, especially in visual and memory tasks.
Professor of psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, C. Shawn Green, explains, Education it will help researchers understand how the games used to train laparoscopic surgeons and drone pilots, as well as to help people with amblyopia (sometimes called lazy eye) and attention deficit disorder, are creating some of the well-documented positive effects.
“Games are very powerful and complex experiences. We know games make interesting behavior changes, but their complexity makes them difficult to study,” said Green, whose work was supported by the Office of Naval Research.
This study also shows that not all training activities are equal. Several types of practice can make a person perfect, but only in one way. The type of training that makes trainees better at learning quickly to perform multiple tasks—or at least more than one—has clear advantages.
According to Green, if people new to the basketball court were just shooting free throws over and over again, they would probably be much better at shooting straight from 15 feet. However, if you ask them to shoot from somewhere else on the field, they will probably go right back to where they started. “We call it transfer failure or generalization failure,” Green said.
In a pair of experiments described recently in the journal Communications Biology, 25 participants at the University of Rochester, New York and then 52 participants at the University of Geneva, Switzerland were separated into roughly equal groups who were assigned to play 45 hours of one of the video game action games, such as Call of Duty or The Sims and Zoo Tycoon.
Before the players start the game tasks, they are tested with tasks that measure their visual perception and working memory skills. The visual perception task required participants to use brief glances to choose the direction of motion of an object or the orientation of running lines.
The working memory test is more challenging, asking players to listen and watch pairs of letters read aloud and the shapes that appear in different locations on the screen. As well as reporting when something matches the sound or placement of a certain number of turns.
The two groups were relatively equal in the initial test. But after their contrasting gaming experiences, action gamers are different. “They immediately got a slight advantage after playing the action game. But the bigger effect was this faster improvement in orientation and memory tasks than people who played other games,” Green said.
The test was chosen because simple movement and basic shape orientation involve parts of the brain involved in very basic visual processing and working memory. “Constantly having to manage new versus old stuff as information comes in is a common factor in tackling new tasks,” says Green.
Unraveling the important aspects of complexity will help future game designers who focus on training. However, there is a problem with action games—they tend to be violent, for example. “Before you can start designing a game that maximizes benefits, you need to know what works and what doesn’t.”
